The past week in wananga I have been reading this book about International Rugby. The book is about Rugby skills and what we could improve on if we are playing the sport. The book is about improving your passing skills, kicking skills, stepping, tackling etc. I have learnt many new things about rugby from reading this book. I used to play Rugby when I was young so I know a lot about this sport. What I like to do the most in rugby is kicking and stepping. Also the past week we have been learning about using a new app called My Mahi. My Mahi lets us check our NCEA results and also check what we have achieved. We have also been doing a lot of well being time. From Monday to Wednesday we have been going outside and play some sports and have some free time, we can choose to go outside play some sports and chill under the tree or we can stay inside and relax on the couches and talk with a mate. Every friday we have to make a blogpost about what we have learned or what we have done this past week.

Basic Tools used in wood work
Today in wood work we learnt about 5 new tools that are being used in wood, There is: Carpenter Pencil,Wood work try square, Marking gauge, sliding bevel, and combination set square. Our task for today was to identify and describe what these different tools are and what they are used for:
Carpenter's Pencil:
What is a carpenter's pencil?: A carpenter pencil is a pencil that has a body with a rectangular or elliptical cross-section to prevent it from rolling away. Carpenter pencils are easier to grip than standard pencils, because they have a larger surface area. The non-round core allows thick or thin lines to be drawn by rotating the pencil.
Why is a Carpenter's Pencil flat?: Carpenters pencils are flat in order to keep them from rolling off the surface the carpenter had placed them on. Many times a carpenter or woodworker is holding multiple items in their hand while marking something.

What is a Marking Gauge:A marking gauge is used in woodworking to mark out lines for cutting or other purposes. The main purpose is to scribe a line parallel to a reference edge. The gauge consists of a beam, a headstock, and a scribing or marking implement, typically a pin, knife, pen or wheel. The headstock slides along the beam
Try Square:
What is a Try Square: A try square or try-square is a woodworking tool used for marking and checking 90° angles on pieces of wood. Though woodworkers use many different types of square, the try square is considered one of the essential tools for woodworking. The square in the name refers to the 90° angle.
Combination Set Square:
What is a Combination Set Square: A combination square is a multi-purpose measuring and marking tool used in metalworking, woodworking, and stone masonry. It is composed of a rule and one or more interchangeable heads that can be attached to the rule. It is a measuring tool which is designed primarily for measuring angles and lengths. It is used by people working in a number of different trades, including woodworkers.
Sliding Bevel:
What is a Sliding Bevel: A sliding T bevel, also known as a bevel gauge or false square is an adjustable gauge for setting and transferring angles. The sliding T bevel can set any angle and transfer it on another piece. The bevel can be used to duplicate an existing angle, or set to a desired angle by using it with any number of other measuring tools

The portable electric circular saw, with the blade attached to a motor shaft, is probably the most commonly used saw, particularly by home handymen.

Sand paper it like a piece of strong paper with rough layers of rocks I guess on it.Sand paper is used for smoothing out something on you piece of timber/wood like a rough but on your piece of wood the sand paper is used to smoothing it out.

Task Today-
1-Explain with a graphic the difference parts of a tree
-Leaves: A leaf is part of a plant/tree that's usually green and attached to it by a stalk. When Autumn comes the leaves start to fall off and the green leaves become yellow and orange. A leaf is often flat, so it absorbs the most light, and thin, so that the sunlight can get to the cells.
-Branch: A branch is a woody structural member connected to the trunk of the tree but it is not part of it. There are big branches called Bough and the smaller branches are called twigs. The term twig often refers to a terminus, bough refers only to branches coming directly from the trunk.
-Crown: The crown of a plant refers to the total of an individual plant's aboveground parts, these parts include stems, leaves, and structures. The crown of a woody plant is the branches, leaves, and structures extending from the trunk or main stems. Shapes of crowns are highly variable. Crowns are also described by their width, depth and surface area.
-Trunk: The trunk is the part of a tree that connects the leafy crown with its roots. The roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil, they are transported up the tree trunk in cells that are like pipes. This will allow the leaves to obtain water and nutrients.
Task 2-
How do trees become timber?
The full length of a tree might be too long to transport and work with, so the tree may be cut to a more manageable length. The tree trunks are transported to a sawmill, where the trees are cut to usable planks.
Task 3-
Show and explain the different parts of the cross section of a trunk
Bark- the first layer is the bark, the bark is the protective outermost layer of the trunk. Under it, it is the inner bark which is made of the phloem. The phloem is how the tree transports nutrients from the roots.
Cambium-The cambium contains the growth meristem of the trunk. Directly to the inside of this is the sapwood, These cells transport the water through the tree.
Sapwood- Sapwood is usually lighter in color than heartwood. Sapwood are younger layers of new wood produced by the interior side of the vascular cambium within a tree trunk.
Heartwood-Most of the trunk in an old tree is dead wood called heartwood. The heartwood is old xylem that no longer transports water and minerals up the tree. ... The heartwood is often much darker in color than the sapwood. The heartwood gives the tree support,
Pith- Pith is a tissue in the stems of vascular plants, pith is generally present in young growth, but in the trunk and older branches the pith often gets replaced.
Task today-
Describe explain the different types of cut (eg quarter sawn)
Plain Sawn- Plain sawn in which the blade has teeth with no pitch. Plain sawn lumber is produced by making the first cut on a tangent to the circumference of the log. Each additional cut is then made parallel to the one before.
Rift Sawn- Rift sawn wood is used for applications that require straight lined grain through and through. Tables, chairs and other furniture legs benefit greatly from having all exposed sides with the same linear appearance. Rift sawn lumber milling is more labor intensive than both plain and quarter sawn
Quarter Sawn- Quarter sawn wood is more dimensionally stable than the plain sawn lumber. When cutting a big log into four quarters, then plain sawing each quarter, you end up with lumber that naturally resists cupping.

Knot Knots are imperfections from branches that cause living wood grain to grow around them.

Redwood-A redwood tree can't grow to be the tallest tree on earth alone. Redwoods create the strength to withstand powerful winds and floods by extending their roots more than 50 feet from the trunk and living in groves where their roots can intertwine.

Maths ( Converting M into mm )
Today for maths we worked on converting M into mm, The Process is to move the decimal point 3 places to the right. Here are some examples: 4.32m x 1000 = 4320mm
:4.7m x 1000 = 4700mm
Our task for today was to solve these question ( converting M into mm )
3.72m x 1000 = 3720mm
4.85m x 1000 = 4850mm
0.65m x 1000 = 650mm
8.472m x 1000 = 8472mm
6.75m x 1000 = 6750mm

Maths ( How to convert mm into m )
How to Convert mm into meters
Today in maths we learnt how to convert mm into m, I will show you how to do it. To convert mm into m, I move the decimal point 3 places left, for example: 4700mm we move the decimal point 3 places left, which gives us 4.7m. Today we worked on moving the deimal and dividing, tomorrow for maths we will be working on multiplying. Here are some examples that I did:

7262mm = 7.262m
1200mm = 12m
